What is Anrit Bhav?

Sushree Siddheshvari Devi Ji

Anrit bhav. This means that we display the goodness that's not even within us and we hide our faults that we have within us - to display, to make a show of the artificiality and hiding the reality.

God is not pleased with that.

A disciple said to his Guru, “Guruji I really want to attain the grace of God.”

The Guru said, “You don't mean what you say.”

“No, no Guruji, please tell me how I can receive His grace.”

The Guru said, “Well there's a very, very powerful way and that is to go ahead and tell strangers all about the sins you have committed in your life. Tell them all the wrongs you have done - just strangers. Just go up to them and say, ‘Do you have some time? I'd like to tell you about all the sins I have committed in this life.’”

The disciple said, “Guruji, I can't do that. Tell you what, I will tell you only all my sins and that too behind closed doors.”

Guruji said, “You fool, I already know your sins. You must tell others so that the ill effects of those sins may be destroyed.”

Jagai and Madhai were two disciples. They were cousins born in a Brahmin family and they became disciples of Gauranga Mahaprabhu. But earlier on in their life they were drunkards. They were committing all sorts of sins, but they realized their folly. And they surrendered to Gauranga Mahaprabhu and asked, “How do we atone for our sins?“

Mahaprabhuji said, “You go to the shore of the Gangaji and then build a ghat, like a concrete platform, to make it easier for the pilgrims there. They can bathe there, and they can wash their clothes there. So build a ghat on the shore of the Gangaji and when the pilgrims come there, touch their lotus feet, do pranam to them and disclose all the sins you have committed.”

And these two brothers did that. They actually disclosed all their sins to strangers, to the pilgrims there. If you visit there, even today, in Navadvip there is a Madhai ghat; even today you can see it. It exists, and that was 500 years ago.

So anrit bhav means disclosing the artificiality and hiding the reality.
