The Simple Way of Doing Bhakti

Swami Nikhilanand Ji

In this doha here, Shri Maharaj Ji has made several points, भक्ति मनसे हो (Bhakti man se ho.); that's the first one; नित्य (nitya), the second one; भावनिष्कम् (bhavanishkam), the third one; and अनन्य (ananya), the fourth one. The four main points to keep in mind while doing bhakti. So let's take the first one, भक्ति मनसे हो (Bhakti man se ho.).

Shri Maharaj Ji says, “How many people in the world even understand this very first point about devotion, that it must be done with the mind?” Whatever bhakti is being practiced in the world, 99.99% of it is physically practiced, and the mind is allowed to wander wherever in our field of attachments while we're performing physical acts of devotion, physical acts of worship, and our mind is somewhere else completely. So the very first point in bhakti is done with the mind, “man se”.

When Kapil Bhagwan was describing bhakti, he gave a very interesting definition. He made two points in this one, the first two points Maharaj Ji has made. One, “man manogati”, the loving flow of thoughts from our mind to Shri Krishna. That is bhakti. Just remember this simple definition. Do I have a flow of thoughts going from my mind to Shri Krishna? Then I'm doing bhakti. If that flow is interrupted, then my bhakti has stopped. Now my mind is somewhere in the world. Now there's no bhakti happening, or maybe I'm doing bhakti of the world. If I'm lovingly, emotionally dwelling upon anyone or anything in the world, then I'm doing bhakti of that person or that thing. I will become attached to them through this repeated chintan (thinking), and I'll attain them after death because we attain whatever we're attached to.

यान्ति देवव्रता देवान्पितॄ न्यान्ति पितृव्रता: |
भूतानि यान्ति भूतेज्या यान्ति मद्याजिनोऽपि माम् ||25||

Yānti dev-vratā devān pitṝīn yānti pitṛi-vratāḥ.
Bhūtāni yānti bhūtejyā yānti mad-yājino’pi mām.

Bhagavad Gita: chapter 9, verse 25

This is one of the fundamental principles of sanatan dharm. Whatever you repeatedly think of, you'll become attached to that, and that is what you'll attain after death.
