A gopi (a Divinely realized cowherd maiden of Golok) is saying to her friend, her sakhi (intimate companion), “Oh sakhi, I have completely sacrificed myself - everything - on Shyamsundar (name of God), on Shree Krishna!”
We, the individual souls, have sacrificed ourselves and the material world from beginningless time, because of ignorance, agyān (ignorance) - identifying with the physical body. This is our biggest problem.
Many times, the Divine philosophy cannot sit in our mind because of our identification with the body. We identify with the body, so anything which happens to the body becomes a big problem for us from beginningless time. Nobody can say anything to us, do anything to us. Somebody even looks at us, and sometimes we have a big problem. All our problems have come from this. The root cause of all our problems is not knowing who we are.
The identification with the physical body, this material mānav deh (human body) is very important, this human body. Bhagwan Shree Ram says,
बड़े भाग मानुष तन पावा, सुर दुर्लभ सब ग्रंथन्हि गावा।
Baṛe bhāg mānuṣh tan pāvā, sur durlabh sab granthanhi gāvā.- Ramayan
Bhagwan Shree Ram says to the residents of Ayodhya, in the Uttarakāṇḍ (final section) of the Ramayan (epic of Lord Ram),
“It is the greatest fortune for the soul to acquire birth in the human form.”
Sur (celestial beings) - sur means devatā (demigods, celestial gods): Indra, the king of heaven; Vāyu, the god of wind; Agni, the god of fire; Kuber, the god of wealth. These sur, these devatā, are praying and begging Shree Krishna to have the opportunity to get birth in the human form, and they cannot get it. So it is a great blessing - the greatest blessing.
But we are not the body. Anything which belongs to us cannot be us - “my body”. So how can we be the body? But this has been the problem. And so, identifying with the body, we have been looking for happiness where it cannot be found, in the material world, and have become attached, āsakt ho gai (आसक्त हो गए). We have become attached to the world. This attachment is the cause of all our sorrows and sufferings. So the root cause is ignorance, agyān.
