When we know the goal of bhakti (devotion) is to attain God and, through that, get Divine bliss, then why are we asking God for worldly things?
Number one, the world never satisfies us. However much we have—however much anybody has in this whole world—not a single person is satisfied. And we think that by asking for this little thing from God.
“ज़रा ये काम कर देना मेरा भगवान। Zarā ye kām kar denā merā Bhagavān. (Please do this for me God”
यह चढ़ा दिया Yah chaṛhā diyā (offer to God)
“ये मंत्र बोल दिया तो बलदे में ये काम कर दो। ye mantr bol diya to balade mein ye kaam kar do. (After reciting this mantra, do this task in return.)”
So even if God were a businessman and He were interested in these kinds of transactions—we’re asking for little, little things that we have already attained infinite times in infinite past lives.
And even in this life, we have got so much, and we are still not satisfied, and we are asking for more of the same little, little things. “I just need this thing.” “I just need that thing.” उससे कुछ नहीं होने वाला है Usse kuchh nahīṁ hone vālā hai (That won’t accomplish anything).
It’s like our to-do list is never done. You know why the to-do list is never done? Because it’s not a to-do list—it’s a desire list.
“I want this thing completed.”
“I want that thing completed.”
“I want this thing finished.”
It’s a desire list. So that’s why the list never finishes—because desires never finish.
