What Dharma Binds God

Sushree Gopeshwari Devi Ji

It is the natural nature of the mind to always find faults. It does not leave God and Guru alone. But if we need to tread on the path of love and devotion, and if we wish to make the most of this human life,

दुर्लभो मानुषो देहो देहिनां क्षणभङ्गुर: ।
तत्रापि दुर्लभं मन्ये वैकुण्ठप्रियदर्शनम् ॥ २९ ॥

Durlabho mānuṣho deho dehināṁ kṣhaṇa-bhaṅguraḥ.
Tatrāpi durlabhaṁ manye vaikuṇṭha-priya-darśhanam.

- Bhagwatam 11.2.29

When the nine yogishwars, (who were the) children of Rishabh Bhagwan, out of one hundred sons, among whom nine became yogishwars, came roaming and presented themselves in King Nimmi’s yajna (sacrificial ritual), in the yajna-śhālā (sacrificial hall). King Nimmi was offering the offerings to the fire god, performing his yajna. Out of nowhere, these nine yogishwars came and stood before King Nimmi.

King Nimmi immediately left the yajna. Half a mantra was left unfinished; he abandoned it right there and then. There is no tattva (spiritual reality) greater than a Mahāpurush, Sadguru. He prostrated at the Divine lotus feet of these nine yogishwars, these nine great Mahāpurush Saints, and with folded hands, tears gushing down, his entire body going through haripuleśhan (horripilation) and sāttvik bhāv (pure devotional ecstasy), he said,

“This human life is extremely rare to attain, and in this rare human form, meeting a God-realized Saint is extremely rare. Today I have found you! You have come and blessed and graced me. Now please, please educate me. Instruct me in the best possible dharm (spiritual truth) that I can perform in order to attain the love of my Beloved, that dharm which, when performed, can bind even God and Guru as slaves of the devotee.”

What can enslave? What can bind God and Guru? What kind of dharm, performed by the devotee? Out of the nine yogishwars, Kavi gives the answer:

भयं द्वितीयाभिनिवेशत: स्या-दीशादपेतस्य विपर्ययोऽस्मृति: ।
तन्माययातो बुध आभजेत्तं भक्त्यैकयेशं गुरुदेवतात्मा ॥

Bhayaṁ dvitīyābhiniveśhataḥ syād īśād apetasya viparyayo ’smṛtiḥ.
Tan-māyayāto budh ābhajet taṁ bhaktyaikayeśhaṁ guru-devatātmā.

. - Bhagwatam 11.2.37

Since time eternity, not one day, but since eternity, the jeev ātmā (individual soul) has been averted from God. The only way to return to the Lord is by worshipping the lotus feet of the Sadguru - understanding Him, knowing Him, accepting Him, and surrendering oneself to Him exactly as the Godhead Personality Himself.

Accept the Guru as the Supreme Personality in your heart, keeping no difference between the Supreme Almighty Lord and the Mahāpurush. With this kind of devotion and this kind of surrender, follow the instructions of the Sadguru and practice your devotion.
