Gyanis & the Bliss of Atma

Sushree Braj Banchary Devi Ji

So what the Vedas are saying about Shri Ram?

It is said,

रमन्ते योगिनो ’नन्ते सत्यानन्दे चिदात्मनि ।
इति राम पदे नासौ परं ब्रह्मा भिधीयते ।।
Ramante yogino ’nante satyānande chid-ātmani.
Iti rām-pade nāsau paraṁ brahmā bhidhīyate.

- Padam Puran

Ramante yogino ’nante (‘रमन्ते योगिनो ’नन्ते’) - Ram is that personality in Whom the great paramahans, the highest state of the gyanis is called paramahans. The great gyanis always rejoice the unlimited bliss of Shri Ram unceasingly. They always enjoy the unlimited bliss of Shri Ram.

Who are they? They are called yogindra, munindra, amalatma, paramahans, so many names of these great gyanis. You know, the gyanis worship nirakar Brahma, the formless aspect of God, nirakar Brahma, and they do not believe in any form. In other words, they do not believe in any avatar. This is their firm determination that God is nirakar (formless), omnipresent, almighty, all-pervading, but they don’t worship any form of God. Their practice of devotion is based on their renunciation and detachment. So they start practice from renunciation, and then gradually they go on a very high stage.

After some practice of devotion, practice of gyan marg, they increase their detachment, and then they reach the stage which is called Brahmabhut avastha. It means there is maya. We are under the control of maya, of three gunas, but these gyanis in this state of BrahmaBhut avastha conquer two parts of maya: tamas maya and rajas maya. Two-thirds of maya is won by these gyanis. Now, only sattvic maya is there. So they are not liberated so far, but because they have crossed tamasi maya and rajasi maya, they attain the bliss of atma, the bliss of the soul. The bliss of the soul is also so big, so much, that they think that I have attained God realization - that is Brahmanand. They think it is Brahmanand, because in Brahmabhutah avastha,

ब्रह्मभूत: प्रसन्नात्मा न शोचति न काङ्क्षति ।
सम: सर्वेषु भूतेषु मद्भ‍‍क्तिं लभते पराम् ॥
Brahma-bhūtaḥ prasannātmā na śhochati na kāṅkṣhati.
Samaḥ sarveṣhu bhūteṣhu mad-bhaktiṁ labhate parām

- Gita 18.54

Those who reach the state of Brahmabhutah avastha, prasannatma, they are always happy - nashochati nakankshati - there is no any desire and that’s why there is no cause of any kind of miseries as well.

Why? Because now they have attained the knowledge of atma.
