The Friend and Enemy of Shri Krishna

Shushree Diwakari Didi

And Shree Maharaj Ji also tells us that the one barrier that prevents us from accepting Them (Radha Krishna) as ours is our pride. Our vanity prevents us from accepting Them as ours. And the greater the vanity, the greater the pride, the greater the trouble that devotee is in.

In the direct words of Shree Maharaj Ji,

“You all chant these nectar-filled, nectar-laden chantings. And while some of you make an effort to penetrate into the depth of emotions while chanting these blissful kīrtans, the rest merely mouth the words without feeling anything within.”

So Shree Maharaj Ji says that what prevents us is our pride. And pride is the greatest (enemy). Shri Kṛishna says in the Gita,

समोऽहं सर्वभूतेषु न मे द्वेष्योऽस्ति न प्रिय: ।
Samo ’haṁ sarva-bhūteṣhu na me dveṣhyo ’sti na priyaḥ.

- Gita 9.29

“I have no enemy, I have no friend” But He does have an enemy, and the enemy is pride. And He also has a friend, and the friend is humility. Humility. We can enslave God with humility.

Jalāl al-Dīn Rūmī was a great Muslim saint who wrote a scripture known as Masnavī. And in that he related a very moving story of a shepherd's conversation with God. And this story actually highlights the importance of humility. Because without humility, an aspiring devotee is just that. What? Aspiring. Just aspiring. Without humility, that devotee will only remain aspiring without making any progress.
