The Eight Symptoms of Divine Love

Swami Maheshvarand Ji

The symptoms of Divine love are eight in number and it is through this that an aspiring soul can immediately guess the raging fire of Divine love that the Saint tries to hide. The eight symptoms are enumerated in the Bhakti Rasamrit Sindhu.

स्तम्भ-स्वेधु-रोमाञ्चाः स्वर-भेदो’थ वेपथुः ।
वैवर्ण्यम् अश्रु प्रलय इत्य् अष्टौ सात्त्विकाः स्मृताः ॥२.३.१६॥
Stambh-swedhu-romanchah swar-bheo ‘th vepathuh.
Vaivarṇyam ashru pralay itya aṣhṭau sattvikāh smṛitāh.

In Bhakti Rasamrit Sindhu, Roop Goswami ji says, “If the condition is right, not all the time, if the condition is right and the Saint wants to shower his grace upon us, the name of the Lord is being sung, then something happens:

Stambh - he becomes still like a tree

Swed- starts perspiring profusely

Romāṇch - (standing of the hairs on the body) goose bump

Swar-bhed - the voice changes

Vepatuh - shivers like a leaf

Vaivarṇya - the color of the face, the skin changes

Aśhru - tears starts flowing like a river

Pralaya - becomes unconscious as though dead.”

These symptoms are proof of the unrestrainable, uncontrollable, depthless ocean of Divine love, possessed only by a genuine Saint, a true Guru.
