Shri Krishna's Most Private Teaching to Arjun

Swami Maheshvarand Ji

Bhagwan Krishna says to Arjun in the Gita,

सर्वगुह्यतमं भूय: शृणु मे परमं वच: |
इष्टोऽसि मे दृढमिति ततो वक्ष्यामि ते हितम् || 64||

Sarva-guhyatamaṁ bhūyaḥ śhṛiṇu me paramaṁ vachaḥ.
Iṣhṭo ‘si me dṛiḍham iti tato vakṣhyāmi te hitam.

- Gita Chapter 18, verse 64

“Because you are very dear to me, Arjun, I'm going to tell you the most secret, the most private of private of private of things.

The word ‘guhya’ means private, confidential, or secret. Just like in English, you have good, better, best. So in the same way in Sanskrit ‘guhya, guhyatar, guhyatam’. So ‘guhya’ - secret, private, confidential; ‘guhyatar’ - private of private, confidential of confidential; and then ‘guhyatam’, the most confidential, most private. Not only that, ‘sarva guhyatam’ - most private of the most private. Suddenly, Arjun has stood up, “What is this? You have told me the whole Gita and now the most private of even the most private of private?” (Krishna said) “And I'm telling you Arjun, because you are very dear to me!” Arjun said, “OK, OK Krishna, tell me.”

मन्मना भव मद्भक्तो मद्याजी मां नमस्कुरु |
मामेवैष्यसि सत्यं ते प्रतिजाने प्रियोऽसि मे || 65||

Man-manā bhava mad-bhakto mad-yājī māṁ namaskuru.
Mām evaiṣhyasi satyaṁ te pratijāne priyo ‘si me.

- Gita Chapter 18, verse 65

“Arjun, always, always attach your mind to Me with love, with devotion. Be My devotee, worship Me, do homage to Me, and you will certainly come to Me. I promise you this because you are exceedingly dear to Me.” Always attach your mind to the Lord.

In the whole Gita, the philosophy is given in one line,

तस्मात्सर्वेषु कालेषु मामनुस्मर युध्य च |

Tasmāt sarveṣhu kāleṣhu mām anusmara yudhya cha.

- Gita Chapter 8, verse 7

“Arjun, at all places, ‘Tasmāt sarveṣhu kāleṣhu’, at all times, all time - ‘mām anusmara’. Remember Me, think about Me!”
