Why the Limited Senses Cannot Perceive the Unlimited Divine

Swami Nikhiladnand Ji

How can you perceive or see or know or understand Divine God with a material mind and senses? It doesn't work, it's not possible. Just like I gave the example yesterday that you can't see with your ear, but these are two material things. Sound, which is perceived by the ear and light, which is perceived by the eye. Both are material things and my eyes are material and my ears are material. So why can't my ears perceive light? Why can't my eyes perceive sound? No, there are certain limitations even within this material field. So how could those same senses which are bound by those restrictions within the material field, how could they go beyond that field and perceive God who is Divine? It's simply beyond logic.

God is called prerak and our senses, our indriyan, our man, buddhi, atma, everything is preriya. ‘Prerak’ means ‘God is giving life to’. ‘Preriya’ means we ‘receive the life’. Prerak, God is giving life. Preriya, we're receiving. So how could our senses, mind, intellect who are receiving life from God and only exist due to His power that He's giving us, how could they reach to Him? It's not possible.

He is prakashak and our senses, mind and intellect are ‘prakashya’, meaning like ‘God is shining the light on our soul’. That light which reaches the soul comes down to our mind. That comes down to our senses and body and enlivens our whole being. So we're receiving the light, that prakash, from God. How could we then illuminate Him with those senses? It's not possible.

He is ‘dharak’, which means ‘He's upholding our very existence’. We are dhariyaman. So how could those same senses, mind and intellect, their existence being upheld by God, how could they themselves reach up to God or grasp God? It's not possible.

God is unlimited and our senses and mind are limited. So with a limited mind and limited effort, how could we reach anything unlimited? Again, not possible. So with our limited mind, limited body, we can make a limited amount of effort. And with our limited amount of effort we would be rewarded exactly according to how much effort we made.

So if you do some good actions, you'll be rewarded with a better destiny in your next life or maybe some enjoyment in swarg (heaven). You do a limited amount of bad actions, you'll be given the same limit of suffering in your next life or possibly in narak (hell). So the reward and punishment is always exactly according to the amount that we do. When our goal is to attain the unlimited, then how could any amount of limited effort result in that?

So this is why God is completely beyond us. In fact, that's His very definition.

Veda says,

Brihati bhringayati ititat param Brahm.

The word Brahm means brihati. It means, “God is unlimited. He's the greatest.” So no one could be as great as Him or greater than Him.

So no one can reach Him. But bhringayati is another meaning of the very same word, Brahm, which means, if God graces a soul, He can make that soul as great as Him. In other words, with God's grace, you can reach Him, you can know Him, you can perceive Him, experience Him. But He brings you to that level with His own power, with His grace. We can't reach Him on our own.

So this is why Shri Maharaj Ji says,

Shri Krishna kripa anivarya bata de.

“It is absolutely compulsory to receive Krishna's grace.”
