Devotion Explained Through Relatable Analogy

Swami Nikhilanand Ji

If you are very attached to someone, maybe think back to when you were younger, when you had your first crush on someone. You thought, “I love this person.” Do you remember how you couldn't get that person out of your mind? You're constantly thinking about them like… बिमारी लग गई (bimaari lag gai)…you have fallen sick. ऐसा होना चाहिए श्री कृष्ण के लिए। ये भक्ति है. (Aisa honā chāhiye Shri Krishna ke liye. Ye bhakti hai.) It should be like that for Shri Krishna. This is devotion.

So we're not at that point, right? Think of how easily we get to that point in the world. How quickly we can become attached to someone in the world, to the point that we can’t stop thinking about them. That's bhakti.

When we become like that for Shri Krishna, then we know okay now I'm starting to get some bhakti. I'm starting to get some bhakti in my heart when we get to the point where we literally can't live without Him, like, we feel our prana (life force) is going to leave our body if I don't get His darshan in the next second, that's when He'll come. So from this point where we start thinking about Him all the time till that point where we can't live without Him, we just keep practicing the same devotion. There's no change in technique. We do the same thing, just keep thinking about Him.
