Desires in Vaidhi vs Raganuga Bhakti: Seeking Selfless Happiness

Swami Nikhiladnand Ji

(We should have) no other desire except for the desire for Krishna’s happiness. That’s it.

In vaidhi bhakti (devotion guided by scriptural rules), the desire to avoid suffering is there, the desire to get liberation is there, and the desire to enjoy the opulence of God’s Divine abode in Vaikunth (the Divine abode of Vishnu) is there. But in raganuga bhakti (devotion that follows the spontaneous loving devotion of the residents of Braj), Roop Goswami says no such desires are even allowed.

The same thing is mentioned in the Bhagwatam,

अहैतुक्यप्रतिहता …

Ahaituky apratihatā …

Bhagwatam (1.2.6) says one condition of bhakti (devotion) is that you must be ‘ahaituki’ - with no selfish desire.

So we’re still allowed to desire. We’re allowed one desire - the desire for Krishna’s happiness. What about our happiness? We can’t stop desiring our own happiness. It’s unnatural.

Being that we are ansh (a tiny part) of Krishna, who is anand (Divine bliss), we automatically desire for anand. So it’s our nature to desire happiness. No one can stop that desire. So in what way do we desire happiness? We desire to be happy seeing Krishna happy. In serving Him, in finding a way to please Him or make Him happy, we feel happy. And more happy than we would be if we got a selfish kind of happiness. This is raganuga bhakti, whereas vaidhi bhakti has more selfish desires.

Number two:

…ज्ञानकर्माद्यनावृतम् ।

…gyān-karmādyanāvṛitam.

(Bhakti Rasāmṛit Sindhu),

…अप्रतिहता…

…apratihatā…

(Bhagwatam 1.2.6)

Narad Ji says,

…लोक-वेद-व्यापार-न्यासः।

…lok-ved-vyāpār-nyāsaḥ.”

(Nārad Bhakti Sūtra 8).

In other words, there should be no affiliation of karma (ritual action), yog (the path of spiritual discipline), gyan (the path of knowledge), or any other practice. Bhakti should stand alone in raganuga bhakti.

In vaidhi bhakti they’re allowed to be affiliated. They’re subservient to bhakti, they’re secondary to bhakti, but the laws of karma are there. Some practices of yog or gyan could be along with that, but in raganuga bhakti that is viewed as a distraction.
