Why Krishna is called Dhamudharam

Sushree Gopeshwari Devi Ji

So Maiya (mother) now comes and gets hold of Krishna. And Maiya says,

“You! You’ve become very mischievous, huh? And today You’ve done this, tomorrow You’ll do this. I better fix this problem right now. Come here.”

So Kanhaiya (the childhood name of Shree Krishna) is crying, and the kājal (black collyrium) that is applied to His eyes is washing down. And big, big, big, big tears are coming. His entire hands and legs and body is trembling and shaking out of fear.

And Kunti maiya in the 1st Canto, 8th Chapter, 31st verse of Bhagwatam Mahapuran says to the Lord, when praying to the Lord,

“Oh my Lord, when I remember Your leela (divine pastime) getting tied by the rope and You trembling and crying, oh God, that bewilders my mind. My intellect is very bewildering. Who can ever understand Your transcendental leelas (Divine pastimes)? No one can, no one can!”

This is in the 1st Canto, 8th Chapter, 29th verse of Bhagwatam Puran where Kunti is saying this.

So this way Kanhaiya is now caught by Maiya and Maiya takes Kanhaiya and is now going to tie Kanhaiya to that mortar. So as Maiya tries to tie Kanhaiya, Kanhaiya’s hands are put onto, both the hands are put like this onto the stomach, and the rope is brought. His name came to be Dāmodar (the one whose belly is bound by rope). Dāmodara - dām means rope and udar means stomach. So udar and then the rope. So the greatest of the criminals are tied with the hands and the legs, everything like that. He is the greatest of the criminals. Who can be any bigger dacoit than Krishna? Yeah! He goes and steals the heart and mind of everybody! You know, (one of) His names is Hari (the one who steals the heart).

Yeah, so anyway, so Maiya is tying Him. And every time Maiya tries to tie with the rope, the rope is two fingers short. Dou angal means the width of two fingers. All the time, you know why only two fingers short? The width of two fingers? Jeev (individual soul) and Brahma (Supreme reality), God Brahma (Supreme reality) and the jeev ātma (individual soul), the soul, are only this distance. We are only that distance and yet we are not turning towards Him. What a pity!

So Kanhaiya cannot be tied. Every time all the rope from Braj came and everybody gathered also, but she cannot, Maiya, cannot tie. It’s always two finger width, short.

Radha was there. ‘Kripayāsīt’ (Divine grace power), ‘swambandhane’ (self-binding). This is in the 10th canto, 9th chapter, 18th verse. When kripashakti (Divine grace power) comes of Krishna, then Krishna swayam (Himself) got tied up. His Kripashakti, otherwise this Maiya, 10th canto, 9th chapter, 13th and 14th verse is trying to tie that Supreme Brahma (Absolute reality) whom the greatest of the tapasvis (ascetics) and yogis (spiritual practitioners) and munis (sages) and devis (goddesses) and devatas (celestial beings), no one can tie.

He cannot be bound by anyone, independent as He is. Plus, He has no beginning, no end. No interior, no exterior; no front, no rear, beyond time, space and cause. The very time, space and cause itself, cause and effect is Krishna; before creation, after creation He shall be, and in every atomic particle of creation.

This Shyamsundar (the beautifully dark Lord), Maiya is trying to tie. Anyway, Radharani is there as well. And most of you don’t know about this. Radharani’s hair was plaited and tied with a ribbon. So she takes the ribbon out, her hair ribbon out, and hands it to Maiya Yaśhodā. Maiya Yaśodā joins it with the rope and ties Krishna. Maiya and Krishna is now tied.
