We Look at Outer Qualities but Krishna Looks Into Our Heart

Swami Nikhiladnand Ji

व्याधस्याचरणं ध्रुवस्य च वयो विद्या गज्स्तर्त्रस्य का कुब्जायाः किम् उ नाम रूपम् अधिकं किं तत् सुदाम्नो धनम्।

Vyādhasyācharaṇaṃ dhruvasya cha vayo vidyā gajendrasya kā kubjāyāh kim u nām rūpam adhikaṃ kiṃ tat sudāmno dhanam.

- Shri Hari-Bhakti-Vilas

A Saint says that Shri Krishna has no swarth like we have, because He is already the very form of Divine bliss. So, He doesn’t require any external gratification to give Him pleasure or happiness. He is Atmaram. He is fully immersed in His inner state of Divine bliss. He has no need to see, taste, touch, or hear anything to make Him happy.

In the world we look, “Okay, this person is very wealthy.”

That changes our outlook on them. If you first meet a person and then you find out,

“Oh, what, this is Jeff Bezos! He has that many billions of dollars!”

All of a sudden, look, it changed. Now you’re looking at him differently. Why? Because deep in our heart, we feel we can get something from him. If he’s not going to give us money, at least if he knows us, and other people know that he knows us, we have some social capital, if not financial capital. So, everything is viewed through that framework. That’s how our mind works,

“Oh, this person is very beautiful.”

Same thing. They’re so beautiful. Maybe they won’t want to marry me, but at least if they’re my friend, that’ll give me more social capital. Others will see, “Oh, this person is so beautiful, and they accept you? Okay, there must be something good in you. I’ll also accept you.”

Our mind is always evaluating according to this: Where can we get this kind of gain? Shri Krishna’s mind doesn’t work like that.

This shlok that I just sang for you says that He doesn’t look at that at all. He looks at our devotion, our humble surrender, and our love for Him. He sees directly into our heart. He didn’t look at Valmiki’s past behavior. All the sins he was doing before he surrendered. He looked at his bhakti.
