The Mystery of Yogmaya: Action Without Attachment

Swami Maheshvarand Ji

There’s a special power that Shree Ram has, which is called Yogmāyā (Divine illusionary power).

কর্তুমকর্তুমন্যথা করিতে সমর্থ
कर्तुम् अकर्तुम् अन्यथा कर्तुम समर्थः
Kartum akartum anyathā kartum samarthaḥ.

(He has the power to do, not do, or do otherwise).

- Shree Chaintanya Charitavali

This thing is not easy to understand, this thing called Yogmāyā that someone can have no anger and perform an action of anger. We have Saints like Durvasa, he’s getting angry. They’re fighting war. To fight war you have to get angry to kill someone. He is performing action of lust, yet has no lust. The Gopīs (cowherd maidens of Braj) are confused.

He (Shree Krishna) says (to Gopis), “Tell Yamuna, if Shree Krishna is a akhaṇḍ brahmachārī, (a perfect) celibate who never once even thought about lust, even in a moment, (then) Yamuna should give the way.”

And the Gopīs are looking to each other. What are they saying?

“Day and night He’s having amorous pastimes with us! Let’s go and see.”

“Hey Yamunā Maiyā (mother Yamuna), if Shree Krishna is a akhaṇḍ brahmachārī, please give the way!”

Yamuna parted, and a bed of flowers appeared.

They went to Durvasa, the Guru. They had to break their fast. They were doing Kātyāyanī vrat (the sacred vow for Goddess Katyayani). Right now that is not like people in the world, for some material desire, they wanted to attain Shree Krishna as their husband. So they went.

Krishna said, “Go to Durvasa, he’s My guru.”

They went to Durvasa muni. Durvasa muni saw all these Gopīs, thousands of Gopīs.

“What are you doing here?”

“Oh Guruji, we did Kātyāyanī vrat, and we wanted to break the fast, and Shree Krishna said, go to my guru.”

He just touched the lid and said, “Okay, finished.”

“No, no, Guruji, you have to eat!” (There are) thousands of Gopīs with baskets-filled (with food). Durvasa started to eat everything.

The Gopīs said, “Look, oh, Babaji is very nice! He’s very greedy. He ate everything!”

Now the Gopīs have to go back (because) it’s night time. There’s no boat. Their children are waiting in Vrindavan, Barsana, Braj. They have to cross the Yamuna.

So they said to Babaji, “Guruji, it’s night time. There’s no boat (and) we want to go back home.”

“Okay, go to Yamuna and say that if Durvasa never ate anything except dūb ghās (a type of sacred grass), Yamuna will give the way.”

The Gopīs said, “Hey Bhagwan! First Krishna told us He’s a akhaṇḍ brahmachārī and Yamuna gave the way. This Babaji said he never ate anything except one blade of dūb ghās, but he ate everything!”

So they went to Yamunā Maiyā, and Yamunā gave the way. The Gopīs are totally confused.

Then Krishna explained,

“God and the Saint, they do action through Yogmāyā. Like the water on a lotus leaf, it rolls - you put some water there, and it doesn’t stick; it rolls like a pearl.”

So the actions of God and the Saint have no effect. They’re doing action through Yogmāyā. Whatever God and the Saint, whatever Shree Ram does, is only for the benefit of us.
