Ved Vyas himself gave all the Upanishads (scriptures) and he gave 17 Puranas (sacred texts), and he gave itihas (historical) in the form of Mahabharat and Ramayan which was given to us through Maharshi Valmiki who is none other than the same form as Ved Vyas.
Thus, in this manner, after giving all the writings and explanations, trying to teach us the philosophy about the Supreme Brahm, Ved Vyas still felt very dissatisfied and discontented. He had done such a wonderful job of partitioning the Vedas into four sections for the limited minded people like you and I. Gave all the Upanishads in explanation, gave all the 17 Puranas; these are like illustrations, like parables. These have got lots of stories to back up the philosophy and then Itihas Puran and yet he’s dissatisfied.
Yes, he gave us Vedant Darshan Shastra (philosophical system explaining ultimate reality) out of the six Darshan Shastra, and yet he’s not satisfied with all the scriptures. That’s when he’s sitting very discontented, very sad, not knowing what it is that he has not done till now for the welfare of mankind. This is his seva (selfless service) and he is unable to serve the human beings of this creation and follow the instructions of the Supreme Brahm (Absolute reality) Shree Krishna. He still feels that he lacks a lot, despite the fact after giving one billion verses in explanation.
Ultimately when Narad Muni happens to pass by, Maharishi Narad (said),
“Narayan! Narayan! So what’s happening? (You are) so sad? You’ve given so much for the welfare of mankind and yet you are so discontented?”
“Yes, there is a missing puzzle and unless and until I find that missing puzzle, everything is zero. Everything is zero! Every writing would be a waste. Nobody on this earth planet will ever fall in love with God, can ever get attached to God! They will continue to look for happiness, for peace, for love in this maya (material illusion) world. I don’t know what it is that I have not touched, mentioned, given to mankind and that one thing in itself is good enough. But what is it?”
Maharishi Narad says, “Narayan! Narayan!”
Seated in the heart of Maharishi Narad, the same Supreme Brahm Krishna is now going to reveal the same Puran, the same teaching to Ved Vyas Ji who said,
“You have talked about the Supreme Personality of Brahm. The Vedas glorify Brahm. They talk of the Divinity of Brahm, the aishwarya (Divine opulence) of Brahm, the shakti (Divine power) of Brahm, all the supremacy and Divinity you have glorified. But where is the love aspect? The love, love, love! Have you talked about the Beloved? The Beloved, not the God, (but) the Beloved.”
“That’s it! That’s it!” (Said Ved Vyas Ji).
