On Materialism, Moderation, and the Duty of Charity

Sushree Gopeshwari Devi Ji

For body, for body, for body, this perishable body, this mere lump of clay, that’s all it is. So much time and so much energy wasted away in this, and so much money.

So your basic necessities, no scriptures, no guru, not even Shree Maharajji, stop us from spending on our basic necessities. It must be properly used for your food, clothing, shelter, and whatever is a very basic necessity. You must, to that degree only.

Rest, if you have $100, then give $10 in Daan (charity). And those who earn $10, $1 in Daan. And those who are earning $100, 10% of that, million, 10% of that. So according to your earning, you will give the monetary seva (selfless service).

But if somebody is very poor, does not have anything, can’t even get bread for the day, then it’s okay. It’s okay if you give something else.

You do Tanki Seva (service through the body). Tan (body) means your physical body. Don’t do your monetary seva, do physical seva. Sweeping and cleaning and doing all sorts of seva related to God.

Wherever and whatever you do this seva, be it in the ashrams where it is a must for us to do our sevas, monetary, physical and all. But even at home, if you are doing anything, do it as a seva to God. How? As an offering to the Lord.

यत्करोषि यदश्नासि यज्जुहोषि ददासि यत् |
यत्तपस्यसि कौन्तेय तत्कुरुष्व मदर्पणम् ||

yat karoṣhi yad aśhnāsi yaj juhoṣhi dadāsi yat
yat tapasyasi kaunteya tat kuruṣhva mad-arpaṇam

- Gita 9.27

Whatever action, karma (action) you do. It’s not that only the karma in the mandir (temple), that action in the temple or in the ashram, anywhere you are, whatever actions you do, whatever you eat, whatever tap (austerity) you do, tapasya (spiritual austerity) you do, whatever yagya (sacrificial ritual) you do, whatever daan (charity) you do, do it as an offering unto me. 9th chapter, 27th verse of Bhagavad Gita (Hindu scripture).

What is doing in offering? Remembering the Divine beloved Lord.
